Surgical Instrument Sterilization — ASC Infection Control Survey Results

Unsafe infection practices and equipment reprocessing continues to be an issue at ambulatory surgery centers.

Recently, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared results from a CDC/CMS infection control worksheet at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Annual Conference.

Findings revealed persistent problems with the following:

  • Improper cleaning and disinfection of devices between patients.
  • Communication barriers between nursing and environmental services staff as to who is cleaning what surgical instruments and when.
  • Reprocessing mistakes with failure to pre-clean surgical instruments and equipment before disinfection and sterilization.
