Unsafe infection practices and equipment reprocessing continues to be an issue at ambulatory surgery centers.
Recently, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared results from a CDC/CMS infection control worksheet at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Annual Conference.
Findings revealed persistent problems with the following:
- Improper cleaning and disinfection of devices between patients.
- Communication barriers between nursing and environmental services staff as to who is cleaning what surgical instruments and when.
- Reprocessing mistakes with failure to pre-clean surgical instruments and equipment before disinfection and sterilization.
